Earl Hamner He was 92 and had battled cancer for nearly two years. He is survived by Jane, his wife of 61 years, as well as his son Scott, himself an accomplished writer, and daughter Caroline, a family counselor. Born into a large affectionate family in Virginia's Blue Ridge foothills in , Hamner knew from an early age that he wanted to be a writer.
